Setting the Table: What is Wardrobing?

Eclecticism has been called many things over the years: hippie, bohemian, shabby-chique, or, as I called it, My-early-twenties.  Mismatched wares offer a way to show your personality.  It may be driven by a lack of funding or by a sense of style.  Whatever your reasons, wardrobing, as I call it, is a great way to create fun tablescapes that can turn a meal into an event.

When wardrobing your table use layers:  Chargers, dinner plates, salad plates, soups plates, martini glasses, leaves, fabric, bricks . . . alright, maybe not bricks but use whatever your heart desires.

Future segments of Bill’s World will delve more into the world of wardrobing and tablescaping.  Consider a few things when setting a table and try some of these tips and tricks on your family or friends.

First, consider your audience and the reason for the party.  Who will be enjoying your work?  Are you serving a typical evening dinner?  Turn it into anything but typical and keep your kids wanting more.  Are you serving dinner to your close friends?  Or are you having the new neighbors over for dinner?

Second, and a very important rule:  Don’t bite off more than you can chew.  How much time do you have?  Never rush this job.  A simple tablescape is better than a half finished tableau disaster.

Lastly, have fun.  The table is the international symbol for love and sharing.  Make the table setting look interesting, fun and something your guests will talk about with friends who were not lucky enough to receive your invite.  Check back for in depth how-to’s and examples.
